Base Defenses
In a post apocalyptic world, home is more than a place to stash your loot or get out of the weather. It is about protection and security. The game has the basics down for the new or casual players to get started and get their foothold in the world to start building up some supplies and gear but what the game lacks is an “end game” goal. An end game goal for those of us who want to take the game more seriously and are no longer satisfied with a tent stashed somewhere along the edge of the map. The time has come for bases! Fortified and heavily armed strongholds where guilds, clans and organized groups of players can create a base of operations that is resistant to bandits and immune to server hopping ghosters. In this document I will cover many ideas I have thought up that would allow for such an idea to become a reality as well as some of the end game content that this sort of feature would bring to the end game that will take this mod to the next level in its development.

Concept
Base defenses would be made up of two separate categories. Unpowered and Powered. What defines an “Unpowered” versus a “Powered” defense? An unpowered defense would be something like razor wire, tank traps, sand bags or guard towers. Those types of defenses would remain in place and be useful until destroyed or removed. While a powered defense requires a petrol fueled generator nearby to provide them with power so they can work. These types of defenses would be something like sentry guns, electrified razor wire and flood lights.

Why add this feature?
Having a base means nothing if you cannot defend it while you and your mates are offline and having defenses mean nothing if a cheating bandit can go to a different server, walk past where your defenses are and then get back onto your server to take your gear. There needs to be a way to prevent this sort of BS and that answer is powered base defenses. On top of the security it would provide you, your vehicles and your tents it WILL add EPIC clan on clan bandit wars! You have an epic server fort? Well the bandit gang in the other server knows about it and now they’re coming to your server to try to siege your fort and take your loot! End game bases, epic PvP, making gas stations and supply lines a major point of interest and a way for people to defend the loot they have worked so hard to get. Why would you NOT add this feature? The possibilities and fun that would come from this feature are endless.

Patented Anti-troll system
I know some of you are thinking “What’s stopping some jerk from setting up defenses all over the bean coast to grief new players or in the firehouses and barracks?” So I ask you to please re-read the part above where I said “Petrol fueled generators nearby to provide them with power so they can work” and then please try not to think to hard for the rest of this document. Without fuel or ammo your sentry guns won’t fire and your razor wire won’t be electrified. Simple as that. It would take some very dedicated and well equipped trolls to set up a generator, place a turret and do constant fuel and ammo runs for them to keep them running. No one will be able to keep that going forever. You might have some guys camping a fire station or barracks with a turret at first but eventually they are going to need ammo and fuel that’s where the war of attrition comes into play. If you wait outside and stop their supply lines from getting through. You just ruined their lame little plan. Problem? ;)

Implementation of Base Defenses
Powered base defense items would be much like setting upĀ  a tent is now. You have the item in your inventory and if you try to place it somewhere outside of the range of the generator, on uneven ground or to close to an object you will get a message “Must be placed on a flat ground, not near other objects and within XX range of a power generator”

Defense Item List
The items at the disposal of our potential fortifiers are important for many reasons. They need to be useful and effective but not over powered or impossible to counter. Here are several ideas I have come up with for base defenses. I will include a simple break down of their strengths, weaknesses and scenario of use for each item to help give the reader an idea of how these would fit into the world of Chenarus.

Power Generator
These handy portable generators were once used by civilian and military personnel alike. Before the disaster they were used in powering house hold appliances, lights at construction sites and even military equipment. The Power Generators of Chenarus are now used in powering base defenses for the survivors of the zombie apocalypse. Requires petrol fuel from Jerry Cans to be turned on. Fuel consumption varies depending on how many and what kind of defenses are plugged in. Lets say we have a fully utilized generator that runs all day and was powering 1 flood light, 1 electric razor wire and 1 sentry gun. The fuel tank would need to be refueled every 24 hours and would take roughly 4-5 jerry cans of fuel to bring to 100%.
Strength: Able to power a number of powerful and useful items to help defend key locations.
Weakness: Runs on petrol fuel and must be refueled often. While running the generator creates a large amount of noise and will attract zombies. Limited number of “Plug ins” for base defenses.
Scenario of use: You have a location you would like to defend. You set up a generator and then link various base defenses up to secure the location from enemy players and zombies.
Generator notes: DAMAGEABLE FROM PLAYERS AND ZOMBIES. FUELED BY PETROL, REPAIRABLE WITH SCRAP METAL AND GENERATOR PARTS. FOUND IN CIVILIAN, INDUSTRIAL AND MILITARY LOCATIONS, VERY RARE.

Sentry Guns ( Tripod M249 weapons system with upgradable optics )
The military had been testing automated sentry guns for defensive operations for quite some time but before the project was ultimately scrapped due to friendly accidents a few working prototype models were produced and can still found in military locations. Available in standard or thermal motion sensor optics. The optics allows the sentry to determine friend from foe and allows the weapons system to engage it’s targets accurately. All optics are motion sensors and track based on movement but are limited by light. Low light situations such as night time or rain and cloud cover will dampen the range and accuracy of the weapons system. Adding flood lights will aid the weapons system in low light scenarios but at a larger strain on your generators fuel consumption. Upgrading the weapon with thermal optics will remove the need for flood lights but finding such equipment is extremely rare and is some of the most sought after pieces of technology in your home defense arsenal. Friend from foe system would work as follows. Place the sentry down, open the action menu for the sentry, select “Add Friend”, enter your friends DayZ GUID (Globally unique identifier), profit.
Strength: The Sentry Gun is powerful and accurate firepower with upgradable friend from foe optics system. Shreds through zombies and players who are foolish enough to walk into range of this ever vigilant sentinel.
Weakness: Range and accuracy are greatly reduced when lighting is low. Vulnerable to long range fire that exceeds the optics range of the weapons system. Requires M249 belts to fire so on top of doing daily fuel runs to keep your generator’s going, you will need to find ammo to keep the Sentry functioning as well. Emits a slow, intermittent beeping sound to alert players of it’s presence. This beep will attract nearby zombies. Does not differentiate between players without being told who is friendly and who is not.
Scenario of use: You have a base set up inside the walls of Devil’s Castle with tents and a helicopter. You have the entrances of the walls guarded with razor wire and sandbags. A bandit knows you have tents inside and decides he is going to be an ass and leave server, walk inside the walls in a different server and then log back into your server for free loot. He logs in and gets blown away by the Sentry and you get to laugh at his QQ thread on the DayZ forums.
Sentry Gun notes: DAMAGEABLE FROM PLAYERS AND ZOMBIES, FUELED BY M249 AMMO AND OPERATIONAL POWER GENERATOR, REQUIRES PLAYER GUID TO ADD TO FRIENDLY TARGET LIST, REPAIRABLE WITH SCRAP METAL AND SENTRY GUN PARTS, FOUND IN MILITARY LOCATIONS, EXTREMELY RARE.

Electric Razor Wire ( Regular Razor Wire hooked up to Generator )
Electric fences have been in use for over a century by civilian and law enforcement alike. But now instead of keeping live stock or criminals in, it will be used to keep bandits and zombies out. Electric Razor Wire is nothing more that your standard Razor Wire that you find around Chernarus that you have connected directly to your generator. Think of it as an over sized bug zapper for zombies.
Strength: Easy to use and set up, very effective against anyone who touches it ( instant death or unconciousness ) Cannot be removed without turning off power or killing the person who removes it.
Weakness: Will kill or singe anyone who touches it, friend or for alike. Constant slow power drain while active.
Scenario of use: Place at choke points, doorways and around key locations to prevent enemy movement.
Electric Razor Wire notes: DAMAGEABLE/REMOVABLE ONLY BY PLAYERS, FUELED BY OPERATIONAL POWER GENERATOR, WILL HARM FRIENDLY TARGETS.

Flood Lights
These industrial strength Flood Lights were used in many construction sites all over Chenarus. Allows players to light areas that would other wise be obscured in darkness.
Strength: Very effective at lighting large areas and illuminating threats.
Weakness: Light attracts zombies, Constant slow power drain while active.
Scenario of use: You have a few non-thermal optic Sentry Guns set up at a key location at your base. It is raining and night time on your server. You put up a Flood Light and now your Sentry Guns are ready to send some lead love into whoever approaches your camp.
Flood Light notes: DAMAGEABLE BY ZOMBIES AND PLAYERS, FUELED BY OPERATIONAL POWER GENERATOR, REPAIRABLE WITH SCRAP METAL AND FLOOD LIGHT PARTS, FOUND IN INDUSTRIAL LOCATIONS, RARE.

Guard Towers
Having a birds eye view and a defensive position is a crucial advantage in any engagement and thanks to the abundance of deer stands around Chenarus you don’t even need blue prints to know how to set one up. These “Guard Towers” are nothing more than constructable deer stands but act exactly like tents would. Two days after the deer stand owner’s death the deer stand crumbles to the ground ( you never were much of a carpenter )
Strength: Great way to give yourself an eye over a location you might need to defend.
Weakness: Wood isn’t very bulletproof
Scenario of use: You have your Razor wire, generator and turret set up along your base perimeter. But you want an added advantage in case your primary defense fails. You can set up a Guard Tower so you can watch over your base walls.
Guard Tower notes: DAMAGEABLE BY PLAYERS, CONSTRUCTED AND REPAIRED BY SCRAP METAL AND LUMBER, FOUND IN CIVILIAN AND INDUSTRIAL LOCATIONS, RARE.

After thoughts
I have never had so much fun in a mod before DayZ and I feel that with strong community backing this idea we might be able to see something like this in our future. The stock piling of supplies and vehicles while battling off bandits is what drives the end game content of this game and adding in base structures and defenses like that ones I have described above will INFINITELY enhance the re playability, tactics and fun that this amazing game has to offer.   1. So about the serverhoppers.. easy solution.. your character gets locked to the server you play on, go to a new server, you start off with a new char.

    You play this char and go back to the previous server, you play your previous character. no more serverhopping and similare PVP cheating. if you log, enemy can just wait for you to log back in. So you fight.. or die =) no more logging onto server II and then walk behind your enemy.. and log to previous server again to shoot him in the back.

    • The author of that post told me he wants to see pretty much the same thing you describe. The only issue is that people might have hundreds of characters clogging up the databases. An easy solution would be to limit you to say 3 characters at a time. As soon as you log into server number 4 you would lose the first character. I think that might work.

      • Yea that is not gonna happen. Simply because

        a) Servers are not always permanent. They are offered by third parties and can be unstable.

        b) You have no idea how many servers i have to try out until i find one that works for me (Preferences, no lag, amount of players, etc.)

        c) Have fun with your 3 characters on 3 empty servers…
