This goes 3rd person? What is this sorcery?!
“Is it clear Bael?”
“I don’t know, I can’t see in the room.”
“Lean around the corner then.”
“Are you using 3rd person?”
“What’s 3rd person?”
“Hit the enter key on your num pad…. You mean to tell us that you’ve been playing in nothing but 1st person this whole time?”
“I just figured it was a ‘first person shooter’….”
Sighing on TeamSpeak.
I know this is controversial, the whole “3rd person exploit” but I’m going to talk about it anyways.
When I first started playing, I had no clue about 3rd person. I was always in 1st person, and was trying to master the whole hold Alt to swivel my head and still walk and not get disoriented and turned around and still try and avoid zombies and look for other players. It was stressful. It was difficult. I failed, a lot. Then a teammate (as described above) introduced me to 3rd person. Suddenly, it was easier to avoid those zombies because I could see them without having to mash Alt. Suddenly, I could peek around corners and over walls without exposing myself and running the risk of having my head blown off. If I had known about 3rd person earlier, I probably wouldn’t have died so much, let alone have been the worst spotter on the team.
Personally, I don’t run around in 3rd person all the time. Sure, the female skins have sweet baby-making hips, but that’s not really what I’m going for. I’ll turn on 3rd person when moving through the woods, or when assigned to watch the silly snipers. Usually, I’m in first person when I’m boots on the ground in towns. I know, that’s when I should be using 3rd person, but I don’t. I learned how to clear rooms in first person, and it’s a little unsettling for me to try and change that. Sure, I’ll “exploit” it up when I need to peek around a blind corner—I don’t see any harm in doing this. (It’s like saying I shouldn’t use waypoints when they’re enabled on a server. Speaking of waypoints, I need to figure out how to use those too….) If I’m sitting still in a room or a hallway, and I know there’s a potential for someone to log in behind me, I’ll pop to third person as well, just for some peace of mind.
The other night I played for a while on a server that had 3rd person off, and I was fine with that. Having learned how to operate in first person only helped me to grow as a gamer. I don’t need a 3rd person crutch. At this point, 3rd person is just a convenience. It’s just a matter of time before we convince our server Admin that he wants to turn 3rd person off—cue evil laugh.
I’m sure there are other “advantages” to utilizing third person. I know sometimes first person can have a seemingly short field of vision, but I’ve reset my FOV to something comfortable. I’m curious as to how others play-first or third, and why they prefer one over the other.
